A pampered daughter of a rich businessman, Neena (Nargis) loses control of her horse while riding, but is saved by a young man of modest means, Dilip (Dilip Kumar). Neena, ever so grateful, includes him in her social circle where Dilip charms everyone with his innocence and singing. Dilip eventually falls for Neena, but is left devastated when her fiancé Rajan (Raj Kapoor) returns from London. On her wedding day, he finally confesses his feelings to her. Neena tells Dilip that his feelings are misplaced and marries Rajan. Years later, lovelorn Dilip comes back in the happy couple's life and Rajan accidently learns of Dilip's feelings for Neena which leads him to believe that Neena and Dilip are having an affair. Then the aftermath of the situation changes the lives of this trio forever.
